Beer Review #69 (Nice): Goose Island IPA

Style: IPA

Menu description: Grapefruit, piney, citrus-fruity aroma.

ABV: 5.9%

Tasting notes: A great IPA that I’ve had many times. It’s the only IPA that I know of with a sweet finish. Top quality here!

Rating: 4/5

Beer Review #68: Goose Island Fleur

Style: Belgian pale ale

Menu description: Belgian style pale ale, blended with hibiscus & kombucha tea.

ABV: 5.2%

Tasting notes: Definite tea flavors, with some sweetish overtones. I don’t know what the he’ll hibiscus & kombucha tea taste like, but if it’s anything like this beer they’re pretty great.

Beer Review #54: Warsteiner Pilsner

Style: Pilsner

Menu description: Cool & crisp, tangy malts, bread notes.

ABV: 4.8%

Tasting notes: Very pale with a distinctive scent. This has a sweet taste. There’s gotta be some kind of fruit or honey in here. It’s interesting, not like much else I’ve had before. Definitely different from the pilsners I’m used to.

Rating: 3/5

Beer Review #39: Goose Island Beer Grand Prestige Vatgerijpt

Style: Barleywine

ABV: 11.3%

My thoughts: This smells like Grim Bergen! It actually tastes a lot like Grim Bergen as well. Seriously this is a Grim Bergen clone, with a slightly higher ABV. It may have a bit rougher aftertaste. If you like Grim Bergen and want to get drunk faster, this is the way to go.

Beer Review #38: Captain Lawrence Tears of Green

Style: IPA.

ABV: 7.8%

My thoughts: Strong citrus scent. Interesting fruity flavor. It’s very sweet and the hop flavor is almost nonexistent. It’s very smooth and almost creamy. No indication of its ABV. The finish is clean and there’s an almost fresh taste to it, sort of like a fresh and juicy fruit salad. This is a fantastic beer!

Beer Review #36: Knee Deep Follow the Liter!

Style: Imperial IPA.

ABV: 8%

My thoughts: Smells like a sickly sweet mess. It tastes… I dunno. Like an IPA but it’s gone bad. The flavor is like a typical mildly hoppy IPA with something sweet mixed in, but that sweet thing was maybe sitting in the sun too long and has maybe turned a bit. Strong carbonation, medium body, and a mild finish can’t save what’s fundamentally a bad beer.

Beer Review #31: Tsingtao Lager

Website description: Tsingtao Lager offers a crisp and refreshing flavor with a nutty and subtle sweet taste that will complement your choice of cuisine without weighing you down.

ABV: 4.8%

My thoughts: This has a very fresh scent. It reminds me a little of fresh linens, oddly enough. It tastes a bit sweet. There’s a light, malty finish. This beer has some strong carbonation. Amazingly, this has turned out to be one of the few lagers I like! Not only that, but I’d say this is just a really good beer overall. The flavor is mellow without suffering from that watery nonsense most lagers taste like. If I can find this again, I’ll definitely be bringing some home. Something to note here is that the glass they served this beer in was frozen and had a thin layer of ice on the bottom third. While a fun way to keep the beer cold, it actually ends up being too cold and doesn’t do the beer any favors. I’d love to try this again at a more reasonable temperature, but I think my overall opinion won’t change. If it can still taste great when its served way too cold, it’s likely phenomenal under normal circumstances.

Beer Review #20: Wells Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale

UPDATE: It looks like Wells sold off some of their breweries and beer recipes to Eagle Brewery. This beer is now known as Eagle Brewery Sticky Toffee Pudding Beer.

Website description: Using traditional British desserts as our source of inspiration, we discovered that the natural, rich flavours of Sticky Toffee Pudding could be exquisitely combined with darker malts to create a truly distinctive ale. With toffee and caramel hints and rich fruit aromas, Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale is an intensely satisfying beer.

ABV: 5%

My thoughts: This tastes just like toffee! It’s a lot more like one of those gourmet fancy sodas than it is a beer. The carbonation is pretty strong and its a very sweet beer. It’s aroma is quite sweet as well and is reminiscent of pudding, hence the name I suppose. I like it, but my uncle isn’t a big fan. I don’t think he likes beers that skew towards being sweet or fruity. With these last few beers, I’ve been trying to get him to expand his beer palette. When I got here, he was drinking Bud Light Lime, as if that was the pinnacle of beers! Clearly I had to set him straight, and although this one missed the mark, the misses do help me get a feel for what his preferred tastes are.

Beer Review #15: Troegs Nugget Nectar

This is one of my early reviews. I knew less and wrote less and generally they are not as detailed as my later reviews. As I go through my tremendous backlog of beer notes, I’ll indicate which reviews are based off of my older notes. They have less info than I’d like, but they still helped me keep my beers straight, so I figured they’d be worth posting.

Menu description: Smooth resin and grapefruit notes balanced by subtle caramel malts.

ABV: 7.5%

My thoughts: Very light citrus aroma. It’s quite smooth and the caramel flavor really comes through. It finishes mostly clean, but there’s a hint of something at the end. I’m guessing that’s the resin, because I don’t know what else it could be. It certainly doesn’t taste like the grapefruit mentioned in the description. The caramel flavor I mentioned kind of reminds me of those soft caramels you used to be able to get at supermarkets back when they had loose candy bins because apparently people didn’t steal and lol sanitary concerns, amirite? It was a bit unusual for me as most beers with caramel flavors don’t give me that impression. This is a pretty sweet beer, but not so much that you can only drink one. Of course this is a decently strong beer, so maybe you don’t want to go too hard.

Beer Review #13: Dogfish Head Red & White

This is one of my early reviews. I knew less and wrote less and generally they are not as detailed as my later reviews. As I go through my tremendous backlog of beer notes, I’ll indicate which reviews are based off of my older notes. They have less info than I’d like, but they still helped me keep my beers straight, so I figured they’d be worth posting.

Menu: Orange peel & coriander, hints of sweet & tart fruits.

ABV: 10%

My thoughts: This is a really sweet beer. Its smooth and quite pleasant. It has just enough carbonation to give you a tickle. Despite the high alcohol content, it doesn’t taste like its going to get you drunk. The flavor of the beer masks the alcohol flavor completely. This has quickly become one of my favorites; enough so that I ordered a second round, which I hardly do when trying new beers!
